Tricks for Effective Concrete Repairs

Tricks for Effective Concrete Repairs

In most cases, how to repair concrete doesn’t take much time. Better yet, some hacks can be implemented to make sure that the whole affair is safer, effective, and done with expertise.

For the best way to repair concrete cracks, it’s important to note that clean and potable water is essential. The tools should also be well maintained by cleaning as per the instructions by the engineer or supervisor in charge. Besides, be sure that you are well updated by the product sheets before embarking on the job at hand. Other things to take note of include making sure that the mixture is done away from the glaring sunlight and that it is free from any contamination as well as excess water.

Demarcate the faulty area and get rid of it in relation to the size of the defective concrete. If it’s only a small area, then a chisel and hammer could do the work. For a larger area, on the other hand, a drill and hammer will be perfect, whereas an extensive surface will require resorting to a high-pressure water jet.

Concrete should be removed to at least 155mm behind the main bars. You should also ensure that the substrate has no loose materials before proceeding. In case of any cracks, inform the supervisor.

  1. Reinforcement Preparation

Get rid of any extra hanging materials like wires, concrete, and scale. The three techniques involved entail:

    • Abrasive blast cleaning: In case chloride has been used; the reinforcements should be cleaned with water later on.

    • Steel wire brush/ power tools: this method is used with carbonated concrete or in case the two other techniques cannot work.

    • High-pressure water jetting: The least bar to be used should be 1, 100

  2. Reinforcement Corrosion Protection

If you are wondering how to prepare cracks in concrete, then reinforcement corrosion protection should be part of it. It entails two layers of 1mm thick. The first layer should first dry before applying the second layer. Also, the repair mortar should be applied after the two layers are dry. For corrosion applications, brushes will work perfectly for the smaller application, while hopper spray is perfect for extensive applications.

    3. Bonding Primer

Use a sponge to wipe off excess water from the substrate for a smaller section and air pressure for a larger section. Either a hopper gun or brush should be used for the primer application. Make sure that the gun covers all the angles for even application.

    4. Concrete Repair Application

In case of lack of bonding primer, be sure that the substrate is wet as per step 4. If you are using your hands, the repair mortar should be firmly pressed on the specific area. The second layer should be placed only after the first layer is dry.

The surface should be profiled and wound with a trowel. For perfect results, use a PVC or wooden trowel for finishing.

If repair is by spray, the nozzle should be pointed 200mm to 500mm from the surface. PVC or wooden trowel should also be used for amazing finishing.

    5. Smoothing Mortar

The surface should be prepared by cleaning it with water to ensure its properly wet. A Toothed trowel should then be used to smoothen the mortar in a vertical motion. The trowel should be at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface.

    6. After Application

Curing is important as it prevents the concrete from sun, rain, wind, and frost. It should be applied immediately after to avoid cracking.
